Automotive and Engineering Trades

This programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Motor Industry and Competenz Training Organisations.

Check out details of this programme which is designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship in the automotive and engineering industry.

Practical work and theory are closely linked. For much of the time you will be working on self-paced units, involving 50% practical and 50% theory components.

On successful completion of the programme you will have the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate in Automotive and Engineering Trades including the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills) (Level 2) and National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 2)
 


If you have the skills listed below and have either completed a STAR course or gained some or all of the credits on the Units list you will be better prepared to succeed in this programme.


Skills that will assist you to succeed on this programme:

  • Ability to calculate compression ratios
  • Ability to do mental arithmetic
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Can calculate percentages
  • Can handle money, e.g. discounts
  • Can work with electrical volts, amps, ohms
  • Good writing, e.g. for job cards
  • Good written and verbal communication

Entry Requirements:

  • Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability
  • Applicants will have gained NCEA Level 1 (or equivalent). Applicants who do not meet this criterion will be invited to sit a written comprehension test.
  • Students for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS Level 5.5 (or equivalent).

Selection criteria apply. Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please note that adult students with equivalent life skills are encouraged to apply. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

Applicants eligible for selection into this course will need to be aware they will be required to provide their own safety overalls, footwear, and glasses.
