Tai Poutini Polytechnic has developed and had registered a course which covers the requirements as listed in the Health and Safety in Employment Act and the Employment Relations Act. The course has been approved by the Employment Relations Education Advisory Committee and was gazetted on Thursday 27 November 2003. It provides the Health and Safety personnel with the tools to successfully make a difference.
Health and Safety Representatives in the Workplace
This Department of Labour approved course is aimed at providing health and safety representatives with the skills and knowledge for the successful management of health and safety through good faith co-operation with employers, work colleagues and unions.
Career Opportunities
Allows students to begin specialisation in the Occupational Health and Safety area and management and co-ordination of OSH activities at places of work.
Further Study Paths
Progression to higher level qualification in occupational health and safety, such as the National Certificate in OSH (Level 3 and 4) and National Certificates in Business (First Line Management) (Level 3 and 4).

National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Workplace Safety)
This 50 credit programme, comprising 9 compulsory credits and 41 elective credits, focuses on workplace health and safety knowledge as well as recognising competencies associated with a range of
workplace safety and health issues from specific industries. This programme is targeted at those currently working in industry that have an interest, desire or need to become more involved in the management and co-ordination of OSH activities in their places of work.
Core Elements
Participants will gain skills and knowledge in:
The protection of health and safety in the workplace
Applying safe working practices in the workplace
Applying hazard identification and risk assessment procedures in the workplace
Applying knowledge of both general and industry specific methodologies for managing hazards in industry environments

National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (Co-ordination)
This 65 credit programme, comprising 31 compulsory credits and 34 elective credits, focuses on the practical management of occupational health and safety in the workplace and allows candidates to select skills and knowledge relevant to their sector of industry.
This programme is targeted at those currently working in industry that hold positions as first line managers, safety supervisors/representatives, co-ordinators or team leaders and are actively involved in the practical management of OSH and wish to gain further skills and knowledge in this area.
Core Elements
Participants will gain skills and knowledge in:
Hazard identification and control for OSH practice
Evaluating OSH standards and practice
Incident investigation in the workplace
Implementing a health and safety plan for a workplace
Applying knowledge of both general and industry specific methods for managing hazards in industry environments

Further Study Paths
Progression to programmes such as National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) and National Diploma in Business (Level 5), as participants become more involved in the organisation and management of workplace activities.

National Certificate in Civil Infrastructure - Health & Safety & Environment
This National Certificate incorporates two sought after safety roading qualifications: Operate Safe Bronze and Silver Cards.
The Operate Safe Bronze Card comprises 20 credits and is for people employed in civil construction at operational level (70% of industry employees).
The Operate Safe Silver Card comprises 54 credits and is a continuation from the Bronze Card and is aimed at people working at the supervisory level in the civil infrastructure industry such as engineers, site managers, contract managers, supervisors.
Career Opportunities
These qualifications will give the student a chance to take a leading role in health and safety within the civil infrastructure industry.
Further Study Paths
Once the Level 3 National Certificate has been completed, students may choose to achieve the Level 4 National Certificate in Civil Infrastructure Health, Safety, and Environment. The Level 4 programme incorporates the Operate Safe Gold Card designed for managers.
